Chile Regions since 2021
Note: Chile was divided into 13 regions (and from Apr 1980 the metropolitan region of Santiago) in 1974. Each region was headed by an Intendant (intendente), appointed by the President. By 2018 the number of regions had increased to 16. Each region was assigned a Roman numeral followed by its name. From 18 Feb 2018, the Roman numeral numbering was eliminated in the names of the regions.
Amendments to the constitution in 2017 provided for directly elected regional governors (gobernador) and regional decentralization. The first direct elections for region governors took place in May 2021. The region of Valparaíso also includes the province of Isla de Pascua and the commune of Juan Fernández.
Party abbreviations: ChV = Chile Vamos (Let's Go Chile, coalition of 4 centre-right parties, est. 2015); Comunes = Comunes (Commons, left-wing, est.2019); EVOP = Evolución Política (Political Evolution, center-right, member of ChV, est.2012); FA = Frente Amplio (Broad Front, coalition of Comunes and 4 other left-wing parties, est.2017); Ind = Independiente (Independent); PDC = Partido Demócrata Cristiano de Chile (Christian Democratic Party of Chile, christian democratic, est.1957); PPD = Partido por la Democracia (Party for Democracy, center-left, democratic socialist, member of SD, est. 1987); PR = Partido Republicano (Republican Party, conservative, est.2019); PS = Partido Socialista de Chile (Socialist Party of Chile, socialist, est.1933); RN = Renovacion National (National Renewal, conservative, center-right, member of ChV, est.1987); SD = Socialismo Democrático (Democratic Socialism, democratic socialist, center-left, coalition of PS, PPD and 3 other center-left parties, est.2021); UDI = Unión Demócrata Independiente (Independent Democratic Union, center-right, national conservative, Gremigalism, member of ChV, est.1983);
