Colombian
States 1855-1886
Note: Following a constitutional
change (27 Feb 1855) the provinces of New Granada (as
Colombia was called until 1861) gained the right to
organize themselves as sovereign states, while remaining
part of New Granada. With the creation of the Republic of
Colombia (1 Dec 1885) the states were transformed into
departments under the central government.
